The men’s 1500 free will kick off the night a little early after the final was moved from yesterday to today due to thunderstorms. Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine already won the 800 freestyle this week in a season best and looks to capture gold in the 1500 free as well as he comes in as the top seed with a 15:01.20. Turkey’s Kuzey Tuncelli is the #2 seed with a 15:01.53.
Greece’s Kristian Gkolomeev enters as the top seed of the men’s 50 free after swimming a 21.73 in semifinals. Gkolomeev holds the national record in the event with a 21.44 from the 2018 European Championships. Serbia’s Andrej Barna has been on fire this week and is the #2 seed with a 21.92.
Finland’s Veera Kivirinta led the way in semifinals of the women’s 50 breast with a 30.73, notably already tying her time from the 2024 World Championships this past February when she finished 7th.
After already winning the 50 back, Apostolos Christou of Greece looks to win another title coming in as the top seed in the men’s 100 back (53.20). Christou holds the national record in the event with a 52.09 from the 2022 World Championships. Fellow countryman Evangelos Makrygiannis also looks to make the podium after a 53.31 in semifinals.
Even in the rain last night, Helena Bach of Denmark posted a 2:07.39 in the women’s 200 butterfly. Bach won silver in the event at the 2024 World Championships in a 2:07.44 finishing ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Lana Pudar who also will be in tonight’s final. Pudar is the reigning European Champion in the event as well.
Israel’s Ron Polonsky broke his own National Record and earned the Olympic ‘A’ cut last night swimming a 1:57.01. His previous best time was a 1:57.99. Polonsky enters as the top seed and will swim next to Hungary’s Hubert Kos who won the event two years ago.
Portugal will look to win their 2nd gold medal ever as Francisca Martins enters as the top seed in the 400 free after a 4:14.77 this morning. In his lone entry of the meet, Felix Auboeck of Austria swam to the top time of the men’s 400 free this morning in a 3:48.86. Auboeck was 4th in the event two years ago and is looking to make the Olympic podium later this summer after a 4th place finish in the event in Tokyo. Israel’s Bar Soloveychik swam a 3:49.92 this morning, just off his best of a 3:49.21 that was 18th at last summer’s World Championships.
