In the semifinals of the women’s 200 butterfly at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, 17-year-old Alex Shackell clocked a new best time of 2:06.10, breaking Regan Smith‘s U.S. 17-18 girls’ national age group record time of 2:06.39 set back in 2020.

Shackell’s previous best was a time of 2:06.71 from preliminary heats, which previous had her ranked second behind in her age group behind Smith’s old mark. Headed into trials, she had been as fast as 2:07.13.

All-Time Age Group Rankings, Girls’ U.S. 17-18 200-meter Butterfly (LCM):

Alex Shackell — 2:06.10 (2024)
Regan Smith — 2:06.39 (2020)
Tess Howley — 2:06.85 (2023)
Katie McLaughlin — 2:06.95 (2015)
Kathleen Hersey — 2:06.96 (2008)

Compared to Smith’s old record, Shackell was only faster on her second 50, but that 1.17-second gap for that split was enough to make the difference between the two swimmers.
