The men’s 400 medley relay was a tight race that came down to the final touch as Austria out-touched both Poland and Ukraine by less than a tenth of a second.

Ukraine got off to the lead as Oleksandr Zheltiakov touched first at the backstroke leg in a 53.91, the fastest split by over half a second. Volodymyr Lisovets then posted the fastest breaststroke split with a 58.96 to extend the team’s lead over Poland but Austria and Poland were within range to catch the relay.

Then, Ukraine’s lead shrunk from 1.37 seconds over Poland to just 0.64 seconds heading into the final exchange. Heiko Gigler blasted a huge 47.58 freestyle split for Austria to move the team up from 3rd to 1st after diving in 1.06 seconds behind Ukraine.
