In the finals of the men’s 100 butterfly at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials, 17-year-old Thomas Heilman clocked a time of 50.80 to finish second, qualifying for the Paris Olympic team in his second individual event after the 200 fly. He broke Michael Phelps‘ 17-18 U.S. National Age Group record, which was a time of 51.10 clocked back at the 2003 World Championships.
Heilman out-touched Dare Rose by 0.04 seconds largely because of his finish, as to the naked eye, it appeared as if Rose got to the wall before him.
In addition, 18-year-old Kaii Winkler also rose up the 17-18 rankings, becoming the third-fastest performer of all-time in the age group after finishing eighth in the final with a time of 51.51.
