In the women’s 100 backstroke final of the 2024 French Olympic trials, Emma Terebo finished first and took down the French national record in the event with a time of 58.79. That previous national record was Pauline Mahieu‘s time of 59.30 set at the 2023 World Championships, which makes Terebo the first Frenchwoman to break the 59-second barrier.
Coming in second behind Terebo was Beryl Gastadello, who clocked a time of 59.17 and also went under Mahieu’s previous French record. Third-place finisher Mary-Ambre Moluh went 59.29, also breaking the old French record. Mahieu was in the heat as well, clocking a 59.64 to finish fourth.

Terebo improved over a second from her best time of 59.64 headed into trials. Meanwhile, Gastadello dropped from her best time of 1:00.07 from 2019, and Moluh shaved 0.38 from her previous best of 59.67 set this Janurary.

In her heat, Terebo beat out the rest of the top three, as well as Mahieu on both her front half and back half. She is now ranked ninth in the world for the event headed into the Paris Olympic Games.
