We entered day 2 of the 2024 Sette Colli Trophy with a plethora of talent competing at the Foro Italico Swimming Stadium pool in Rome, Italy.
Among the racers is Canadian Penny Oleksiak with the 24-year-old aiming at notching an individual Olympic qualifying time in the women’s 100m freestyle.
At the Canadian Olympic Trials earlier this year, Oleksiak clocked a result of 53.66, her fastest time since 2022. That missed the World Aquatics Olympic Qualification Time of 53.61 but it did add her name to the nation’s roster for the women’s 4x100m free relay.
As we reported, after the Trials, Oleksiak told the media that she would race again this summer to try and improve that result which rendered her the 26th-quickest performer in the world this season.
After bypassing the Mare Nostrum Tour, the Olympic champion is racing here. She dropped the 200m free on day one but indeed was among the 100m freestyle field this morning.
Oleksiak nabbed a morning swim of 55.18 (26.63/28.55), well away from the 53.61 she’s hunting. That placed 14th overall once the heats concluded.
Oleksiak will still have another shot at the OQT this evening should she maintain her slot in the B-Final set for the session.
