Three Italian swimmers likely punched their tickets to Paris on Friday by posting Olympic ‘A’ cuts at the first 2024 Sette Colli Trophy finals session in Rome.

Italian swimmers previously had to hit qualifying times even faster than the Olympic standards, but now they will be nominated with Olympic ‘A’ cuts in events where free slots are available. The deadline to qualify for next month’s Paris Olympics is Sunday.

Michele Lamberti earned a runner-up finish in the 100 backstroke behind world record holder Thomas Ceccon with a personal-best 53.35, dropping a couple tenths off his previous-best 53.56 from March’s Italian Championships (when the Italian Olympic qualifying time was 53.2). The performance should earn the 23-year-old Italian a trip to Paris since he cleared the Olympic ‘A’ cut of 53.74, and Ceccon is the only Italian man who has already qualified in the 100 back. Lamberti placed 11th in the 100 back (53.89) at the 2024 World Championships in February.

Ludovico Viberti added his name to the roster in the men’s 100 breaststroke with a 3rd-place finish in 59.27, under the Olympic standard of 59.49. The 23-year-old Italian sliced just over a tenth off his previous-best 59.38 from last November, when the Italian Olympic qualifying time was 59.1. Viberti didn’t swim at March’s Italian Championships.

Ginevra Taddeucci snuck under the Olympic ‘A’ cut in the women’s 1500 freestyle with a 4th-place finish in 16:08.65. The 27-year-old open water standout shaved more than three seconds off her previous-best 16:11.70 from March’s Italian Championships to get under the Olympic standard of 16:09.09.

Martina Carraro recorded her fastest women’s 100 breast since last April’s Italian Championships, placing 3rd in 1:06.43. The 30-year-old would be headed to her third Olympics in Paris next month since she dipped under the standard of 1:06.79, but there are no available slots in the event as Benedetta Pilato and Lisa Angiolini already qualified. Carraro barely missed the Olympic ‘A’ cut at March’s Italian Championships with a 1:06.82. She owns a lifetime best of 1:05.85 at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Matteo Lamberti was close to the Olympic ‘A’ cut in the men’s 400 free with a 4th-place showing in 3:46.85, missing out on a trip to Paris by less than a tenth of a second (standard is 3:46.78).
